Even with proper preventative measures a veterinarian should evaluate your pets dental health at least once every year. Some of the common signs of tooth and gum problems may include loss of appetite, red or swollen gums, excessive drooling, discolored, broken or cracked teeth, bad breath and pus in the mouth.
If dental problems are identified, your veterinarian will suggest an appropriate measure of care. Frequently a dental cleaning will be recommended. This procedure involves several steps. Your pet will be given an anesthetic so that we can have good access to the mouth. We will perform a thorough examination of your pets mouth, charting any teeth that need to be extracted. A trained animal health technologist will clean the teeth both above and below the gum line with hand instruments and ultrasonic scaling. They will finish off by polishing the teeth, making them smooth to prevent further plaque from adhering to them.
If you are concerned about your pets teeth, please book an appointment for a veterinary exam and consultation.
